Attack upon the Militia of Washington County, Arkansas

April 20th, 2007

The fire was set sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 AM CDT.

Damage to the building is extensive, but repairable. Most of the damage occurred in the office area and the Canteen. The fire was started in the office area and caught the wood ceiling joists on fire. This in turn caught the wood purlins supporting the roof on fire and also ignited the insulating foam board. The foam board then caused the fire to spread throughout the length and width of the building. However, it did not burn hot enough to catch the rest of the purlins on fire. Thus, most of damage throughout the building is a result of smoke and foam board that burned and dripped on everything below it. Significant damage was sustained to the structure around the corner office due to the very hot nature of the fire. It apparently caused the steel trusses and wall cap to expand and crack the outside block wall around the office.

Plainly, this fire was an act of arson. However, the reason for the attack is not known at this time.

If anyone has any information concerning this fire, please contact the Washington County Fire Marshal's office.
